{Feel Good Friday is coming up!!! What will you write about?}
Since the age of 2, Emily has been very opinionated about what she wants to wear.
When she was littler she would say she liked something if she thought I liked it and that ended up costing us lots of money as these outfits would sit in her closet, unworn.
Then she learned that it was okay to have her own opinion and we had fun shopping together…
Mostly.
Because we still had to buy JEANS.
I can’t even begin to tell you the nightmare jean shopping is at our house.
If they are the right length, they aren’t right in the waist. If they are right in the waist they are too long or too short in the length.
If for some miracle they fit, but have some design on them? Nope. She won’t buy them.
Basically, jean shopping is every woman’s nightmare.
I tell Emily every year that it doesn’t matter if we had all of the money in the world, the jeans still wouldn’t fit.
Jean shopping definitely puts a damper on our back-to-school shopping day every fall.
Until this year.
This year we hit the jackpot. The stars aligned and the waist and height and design were all perfect!!!
In one hour we had jeans and tops for the whole winter.
We didn’t know what to do with ourselves, we still had the whole day at our disposal.
So I took her to Starbucks and gave her some coffee…
…to stunt her growth*.
Do you have a hard time buying jeans too? I know I do.
*I did not give Emily coffee. However, it did sound like a good idea at the time just so the jeans would continue to fit. She grew 4 inches last year!

I’m glad you hit the jean lottery! You are right, they are SO hard to shop for! You can try on all day and only come home with one pair. It’s INSANE!
(Btw, there’s no thingy for me to subscribe to follow up comments so I can keep up…do the comments automatically get sent to us anyway on this new site?)
Yes!!! The replies automatically get sent! If you want all of the comments I can work on that and set something up. Just let me know.
As far as jeans…. I have been known to buy extra pairs of ones I like and keepmthe tags on for the next year. I hate how the styles change every year
Ahh cool! Yeah, if there’s a way to get all of the comments when we comment, that would be cool too. That way if a response catches my eye I can jump in on that too LOL!
I definitely have a hard time jean shopping…small waist and muscular thighs are not a good combination for buying jeans! Sigh.
My daughters are another story…Alivia can pretty much fit into anything, Lainey not so much. She’s in the 100% for height for her age and 50% for weight, try buying jeans for that!
I know! I have a small waist as well and jeans always leave a huge gap in my back. Until the low rise came out. I do like those as long as they aren’t too low rise!
Until I was about 13, I was a really skinny child so I could never get jeans to fit. Until my mum found ones which had adjustable elastic waists! Whoever invented those deserves an award. But I was so glad to grow up and fill out and then have adult jeans which actually fitted!

I know! When we first saw those we thought we were in heaven. It is surprising that they do make them because it does increase the time she can wear them and that means less profits for the jean co. Right?
I’m not sure which is more of a nightmare for me: buying jeans or shoes. I guess I have to go with jeans. It always comes to a point where I have a jeans emergency and then can’t find any that fit. But I hate trying them on, so I never just try them for fun when I’m shopping for something else. I was so thrilled when they started making low rise jeans because I’m so short in the body but then they got ridiculous and made the rise like 1 inch and then things looked like they were falling out. So, I go naked a lot.
Ha!!!! I definitely do not try on jeans for fun either. Purses are fun. Jeans are a nightmare. I like the low rise too, but some are ridiculous and I really hate showing it all. I made the mistake once of buying a pair and not sitting down in the dressing room. Then I got home, threw them on and went out. Ummm yah. Big diappointment at the restaurant when I sat down!
The only thing with Hayden is that I have to buy jeans, pants, shorts, etc. that have an expandable waste band. I don’t know how it will be when he is older. I’m not looking forward to it.

I love the expandable waist for Sarah too! She is short so they are a big help to get the right length/waist fit.
Can I ever relate! All through my school shopping years jeans never ever fit. Jeans small enough at the waist to fit me, were made for people shorter than me, and the ones long enough to fit, were huge at the waist. I couldn’t win. Finally, they make jeans the right length and waist size for me. Hopefully you guys can find good jeans every year from now on! I wish you luck.
My jeans never fit either when I was little. Then Guess came out, but my mom said they were too expensive so I suffered a couple more years. Then my mom realized that Guess fit her the best!!! And then we bought them until I had Emily!
I’m pretty lucky because, so far, my daughter’s least favorite thing to wear is jeans. We have to buy a lot of sweats, fleece pants, khakis. I’ve tried but she feels her movement is limited (she can’t climb and be a monkey as much, I guess).
Now she pretty much only wears skirts and dresses. So still no jeans battle for us.
I would kill to have a girl who liked dresses. Emily did like them when she was little, but now it isn’t “cool.” Sarah will not touch them with a 10 foot pole. I’m like, “You are 3, wear a sundress!!!” But nope she won’t.
And neither girl has ever worn anything in their hair. No clips or bows or ribbons. EVER! OK. When Sarah was 1 I used to put her hair into a pony/piggies and it was just so darn adorable and then she got an “opinion.”
I hated jeans shopping till I discovered the petite department!
Also, VERY happy that cropped jeans and cuffed jeans are back in style!
And my 10-year-old boy totally skipped the “young men’s” dep’t. and went straight into the MEN’S dep’t.!! YIKES!
I am short, but have long legs so petites don’t work for me
The tops do, which is nice.
You young small-waisted, petite, and shapely gals just make me sick! lol
I prefer pajama pants. Great fit, lots of styles, and comfortable to boot! Plus, they won’t break the bank.
Ha! I used to weigh more and I always thought that being thinner would be the answer and I’ve got news for you. It still sucks buying pants! Seriously. I bet Angelina Jolie has a hard time. Well…. maybe she doesn’t, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Emily and I always wonder why some company doesn’t open a store to make tailor made pants/jeans for people. You’d go in and get sized and then a week later – poof! The right size. I would pay extra for that.
When Baby, who is now 19 was like 13-17 it was nearly impossible to find clothes for her. She was a size 0 for so long. Like Emily, finding the perfect fit in length, design, and waist was crazy. She had to have jeans that didn’t have rips or the worn look or sit too low. Guess what the fashion has been for the past few years? At 19 she’s finally made it to a size 3 and it has gotten easier for her to find jeans. She’s not as picky as she used to be and the jeans fit her better. Aeropastale was the store we were able to find jeans most often to fit. Good luck!
We have never tried that store. Thanks for the idea!
I loathe shopping for ANY pants, except pajama pants & sweatpants…and sometimes those can be tricky too! Growing up, I was wider in the hips than I was in the waist…which mean a gap in the back. Currently my issue has more to do with the size that I’m having to shop for rather than the fit!
I’m glad things went so well for you guys. Kids can be tricky…I still have a hard time buying for Dylan even though he’s graduated to “men’s” sizes…he’s tall, but his waist isn’t that big…and it’s hard to find a 29 in ANYTHING! Thankfully, we haven’t needed jeans yet…but it won’t be long!
I hate shopping for pants too. I try to do it once a year and that’s it.
Julia does not wear jeans. She wears skirts, dresses, and soft comfy pants (if she has to). So luckily, we’ve got no troubles. Other than deciding when skirts are appropriate.
Congratulations on the stars aligning!
I let my daughter wear skirts when she wants as long as she has tights or “bike shorts” underneath. Or plain shorts under a dress…like comfy pull on Old Navy ones.
That is so sweet that she wears skirts! Emily has gotten back into wearing them as she has gotten older, and it is fun.
My daughter has an opinion about what she wants to wear – but that is from the stuff I purchase. She has only influenced my shopping for her clothes a few times when she was actually with me – I usually shop clearance during sales – so I don’t take her with…she is four and a half.
I HATE jean shopping, for me and for her. My 4 year old girl hasn’t had a pair since she was a baby for the same reasons you stated. Now my 17 month old son, first pair fits without a problem. Sigh.
So I must ask, what brand are they so I can check them out for her?
Kohls Candies. They fit great!
We also usually have luck with the JC Penny brand Arizona, but not this year
I remember having trouble with my kids for sure. You’re right that if they fit in one spot, they’re bad in another!
I had a gowth spurt in the 6th grade. I grew 6 inches in one year and then I stopped and all of my jeans I could wear year after year after that. My mom must have been in heaven!
I wasn’t allowed to wear jeans until I was 17. By then, I had a job, so I could buy whatever I wanted. In those days, it was the Levi’s 501′s, button-fly jeans and nothing else. However, since about 2003 I haven’t worn a single pair of jeans. I missed the whole low-rise, flare-leg thing. Which is a good thing as far as the world is concerned. I haven’t had the figure for that kind of cut since mullets were in. We are all better off. But I do miss them, though… Jeans, that is…
Ha!
I am not a fan of the skinny jean/leg that is out right now. Not flattering at all.
My daughters are older and slightly overweight but they are determined to buy the low waisted jeans. It drives me nuts, but at least I no longer have to pay for them. I also would have loved to have a sister close to my age to share clothes with. there are days it feels like World War 3 is breaking out because one of them wore the other t-shirt or sweatpants.
I wish they were little again, when I was making most of their clothes and all they did was pick out fabric and the only thing we bought were jeans and they were not so picky.
For myself, I now shop online and cringe if my husband thinks he is doing me a favor by shopping for me and bringing things home. I have to have elastic waists now, but boy he picks out ugly stuff!!
I wish my girls didn’t have an opinion. Yesterday, I picked out a winter shirt for Sarah and I showed it to her and she said, “No. It’s too ridiculous.”
Can you believe that? She is 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My husband is like the clothes whisperer. He has a way with the girls and he loves to shop. He will pick out a couple of things for me on occasion, but… Anyway, he stopped the year after I had Sarah. I could only fit into a Large and he bought me a small.
I cried.
He thought that I would be able to fit into it soon. I just saw that I couldn’t fit into it at all. I couldn’t even get an arm into it.
I did keep it and it does now fit, but I think me crying kind of put the ax on him shopping for me again
My granddaughter Grace has always had her own style. It was a little unnerving when she was younger. I always believed that the mother should get the tangles out. This was not to be, however, and being the good grandmother that I am, I let that slide.
Well, that worked for me! And now I have a very self-assured, confident, poised, gifted granddaughter who will go out and conquer the world in her own uniq
ue way!
Her older sister, Kaitin, is no slouch either! She is off to Spain, as of Tuesday, for a semester of submersion Spanish and culture.
I am one lucky Granny!
I have to agree with you there. It vexed me that Emily had such an opinion It drove me nuts. However, she has confidence and style and isn’t easily pushed around so I guess that is better in the long run…
…but I still wish I could dress her on occasion.
I hate buying jeans. I have the worst time and when I find a brand I like I buy multiple pairs. My mom lucked out since I hated jeans until I was in middle school. I only buy Emmy and Madison adjustable waist pants since Emmy who is three can wear her sister’s 12 month pants (they just look like capris on her because she is so tall) because she is so skinny.
Sarah, too, has the adjustable waist pants and they are great. I saved all of Emily’s jeans for Sarah for when she is older just in case. I have also saved all of my jeans just in case for Emily!
Definitely. Just the fact that fall is around the corner and I’m going to have to put jeans on puts me in a bad mood. You know we are all dreading it! In the back of your head you start thinking,
“Hmmmm, how much damage did I do weight wise this summer? Are the jeans going to slide on easy or are they going to stop mid thigh and not budge?”
And you just know that you have to be mentally prepared for this trip because forget it, if they stop mid thigh it’s ruins your whole you know what day and you eat a pint of ice cream to make yourself feel better.
That is so true which is why I keep a pair of freshly washed (they are the tightest) jeans and shorts up in my closet all year round. That way, I try them on once a month to see if they fit. One year they didn’t and I was so sad and pissed off!
The miracle jean for all sizes is the the comfort fit jean from Reitman`s. They have a similar style to a maternity jean but for all sizes. Once you wear these jeans (they also come in capris and dress pants) you will never want a pair with a normal waistband again!!!
Oh I bet! My husband got some pants with an expandable band and he LOVES them!
Thanks for the tip!
